Practitioner Profile | Celeste Shiels

"I fell in love with motherhood and maternity photography when I became a mother myself."

What drew you to do this work?

I've always been in love with photography and studied it at University - but I fell in love with motherhood and maternity photography when I became a mother myself. I realised that mothers were rarely ever in front of the camera as they are usually the ones taking the photos. This was the driving force to start my photography business with a focus on motherhood.

What do you enjoy the most about your work?

Being around others mothers and witnessing their beauty and strength. I love talking to other mothers and not feeling alone in the journey and rollercoaster ride that motherhood is.

What is the most memorable thing you can tell someone about your job?

Photographing the birth of my good friend's youngest daughter, Aura. This was in my early days of photography and my first birth I'd ever witnessed - I am so grateful for the experience and my friendship with Sarah, it opened my eyes to the wonder of birth & the power of documenting significant moments.

Based on your area of expertise, what can you share with our followers around postpartum care?

Make sure you are in the photo! I haven't captured the first few years of my children's life and I regret it as I am hardly in any photos with them. Next year will be the start of yearly photos for my family and I - I know my children will cherish those photos more than anything when they are older.

Do you have any advice for mamas running their own business and juggling all that comes with motherhood?

Don't be too hard on yourself and remember to take breaks and rest (need to take my own advice) - be patient and nurture your business, just like you do with your babies.
