Mama Muse • Leila Armour

Mother to Billie - Queensland, Australia

My name is Leila, and I am a wife, mama, postpartum doula and author living in the sunny south-east Queensland.

I am happiest when cooking (for my family and other mamas), reading on a Sunday morning, in the ocean and watching my daughter Billie explore in nature.

My journey into motherhood was a surprise and whilst at the time, I wasn’t sure if I was ready to become a mother, my experience has given me a whole new purpose, and I am beyond grateful for where my motherhood journey has taken me.

What was your favourite thing about the newborn phase?

The smell and the cocooning. I wish you could bottle the smell of your new baby, that sweet milky smell gets me every time. I loved the slow cocooning of the early days following my home birth. Curled up in bed getting to know my baby and myself as a mama.

What did you find challenging about being a new mother?

The adjustment of having someone solely dependent on you every second of the day. I wouldn’t have considered myself a selfish person, but I really struggled with the relentless nature of parenting. I loved every second and wouldn’t have traded it for the world, but it was all consuming and emotionally exhausting.

How were you supported during your postpartum period and what would you change if you could go back in time?

I was lucky enough to have family close by and my mum cooked for me every day. This was something I had no idea I needed or wanted but it completely shaped my postpartum experience.

I also had practitioners come to my home, so I could enjoy acupuncture, chiropractic care and see a lactation consultant all in the comfort of my bedroom.

If I could go back in time, I would absolutely hire a postpartum doula and extend my period of rest from 2 weeks to 4 weeks. I was so excited to get out and about and for people to meet my baby, but in hindsight, I really should have surrendered to rest for longer.

List your top 3 essentials for a new mother.

  1. Food delivery from family and friends
  2. A good insulated drink bottle with a straw (postpartum is such a thirsty time!)
  3. The Mothers Blend – Foraged For You (postpartum supplement).

    * I have about 15 postpartum essentials, but these are my top 3!

Are there any rituals or practices during your 4th trimester you'd like to share?

The two main practices I weaved into my first postpartum experience were herbal bath soaks and journaling. I found these both really beneficial to my recovery and head space.
