Practitioner Profile | Caitlin Robertson, Hand in Hand Doula
Why did you start your practice? / What drew you to do this work?
Through my own experiences of motherhood and early postpartum, I understand firsthand how challenging it can be without proper support. The difference between my first and second postpartum experiences was profound, thanks to the support I sought the second time around.
I also saw so many of my friends navigating their postpartum journeys with little to no support or resources. As I started to learn more about the importance of postpartum care and some of the traditional practices surrounding it, I quickly decided that more needs to be done in this space to educate and empower. I wanted to use my voice to make more noise about it!
To me, postpartum care isn’t a luxury—it’s essential. I’m passionate about making this kind of support the norm, not the exception, because every new parent deserves to feel cared for during this big transition.
What do you enjoy the most about your work?
What I love most is seeing the shift in a new parent’s confidence. There's something pretty special about witnessing someone go from overwhelmed to saying, “I’ve got this.” Helping families find their rhythm, whether it's through newborn care, emotional support, or just a hot meal, fills me up in the best way.
What is the most memorable thing you can tell someone about your job?
Every family I work with leaves a mark on my heart, but one moment that really stands out is when a mum I supported reached out months later. She shared how a small ritual I’d suggested to make nourishing herself easier had become part of her routine. It was such a simple thing, but for her, it felt like a huge win—and she was so proud of it. Honestly, I couldn’t have been prouder too. It’s moments like that where you realise the little things really do add up in a big way.
Based on your area of expertise, what can you share with our followers around postpartum care?
Postpartum is not the time to be doing it all. Prioritise rest, nourishment, and don’t be afraid to ask for help—it really does take a village.
